Guns

Freedom of firearm access has made hate expressions more dangerous than ever. White supremacists for example use firearms in order to intimidate or threaten political opponents. Armed opposition is a hallmark for hate groups and civilian paramilitary organisations. These extremists are no longer threatening to the public by disarming them with guns.

Hate

Last year, Jason Hayes, a member of the LGBTQ community from New Jersey, organized a national rally to stop gun violence and protect LGBTQ civil rights. Nine people traveled from Los Angeles to support Jason and his cause, calling it DISARM HATES. Now, the bill is back in Congress, as a companion to the Hate Crimes Prevention Act. This Act would make it illegal for those convicted of hate crimes to possess or purchase firearms.

Gun laws

The Disarm Hate Act, a new federal bill, would bar gun buyers from buying guns from people who have committed hate crimes. The Disarm Hate Act, which is dependent upon existing state laws regarding hate crimes and would also ban people convicted for these crimes from purchasing firearms. Background checks for potential gun buyers would be required under the Disarm Hate Act, which is already required by FBI.

Extreme risk laws

Extreme risk laws were designed to stop gun homicides and mass shootings. This type of law grants petitioners the right to ask a judge to temporarily take a gun from a potentially dangerous person. Although these laws are not yet widely accepted by the public they are being applied in certain cases by states. These laws have in some cases prevented mass shootings, and gun homicides. Below are some examples.

Pulse nightclub shooting

Disarm Hate is a documentary about nine LGBTQ activists who participated in a nationwide rally to end gun violence in Orlando and protect LGBTQ civil rights. Harvey Fierstein is the filmmaker and narrates the film. The activists fight against the NRA, fighting for gun reform. They also challenge America's obsession for gun violence. Here's a look.

Sandy Hook Promise

Many groups have endorsed the Sandy Hook Promise to Disarm Hate Act, including the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. In response to the Pulse nightclub shooting that claimed 49 lives, the legislation was introduced in 2011. However, it died in committee. This year, after the tragic anniversary of Pulse, Sen. Casey has reintroduced the bill. Although the Disarm Hate Act may not be enacted immediately, members of the community can make steps to advance it.
