Joint Base Eustis offers hunting opportunities for military hunters

Joint Base Langley - Eustis, Virginia is home to recreational hunting opportunities for military personnel. Since 2004, military personnel have had access to hunting opportunities at Joint Base Langley-Eustis. Hunting opportunities are available for whitetail and small game deer as well as waterfowl. Adam Priestley (Fort Eustis Wildlife Field Biologist) manages the designated hunting area. He also provides information about the free license package for veterans with disabilities and non-resident military personnel stationed at Alaska.

Permit for small game hunt/fish/fur-harvest

To harvest wild mammals, fish or fur, hunters must have a permit to small game hunt/fur harvest. These permits are also required for residents who are on active duty or who are stationed outside of their home state. Active duty members can purchase a resident hunting license for as little as $5. After 30 days, a military member stationed at Montana can purchase a Montana resident hunting licence.

You may be eligible to receive a small game hunt/fish/fur harvested permit in Nevada if a member of the armed services. A non-lottery license is required to hunt deer. To hunt deer, you must reside in the state. A hunting license is available for $9 if the stationed person is outside of the state. For this license to be valid, you must show proof of your military service.

Requirements for hunting licences

An active duty military personnel can buy resident hunting or fishing licenses if they're stationed within a state and have resided there for at least six month. These individuals must have their military ID and documentation to qualify for the discounts. Spouses and children of active-duty military personnel can also purchase licenses at resident rates. However, if you are an active duty military member and are not a resident of the state, you may still be eligible to get a discount.


In addition to the residency requirement, military members are also entitled to free hunting and fishing licenses. You may be eligible to purchase a nonlottery license depending on which type of license is being sought. All you need is a valid military identification card, and proof of your service. If you're applying for a non-lottery hunting license, you'll need to provide a copy of your military orders, as well as a $30 check. Requirements for nonresident military personnel stationed in Alaska

Alaskan residents may not be eligible for service if they are serving in the United States Armed Forces. In order to qualify, nonresident military personnel must surrender their home state driver's license and current identification. They will also have to apply for a new Alaska driver’s license. If they are leaving Alaska, they must surrender the Alaska driver's license to the new state where they will be living.

Active duty military personnel, veterans and members of the Alaska military reserve may receive fishing and hunting licenses at a discounted rate. Additionally, licenses may be provided at no cost to disabled veterans. However, they must have been living in Alaska for 12 consecutive months prior to applying for a license, and must have been honorably discharged. A person who has been in Alaska for less than two years is eligible for a reduced-rate or free hunting licence.
